The Room: Days 1, 2 and 3! Tuesday 4th September 2007, 12:00 AM
Well i did it, i decided to redo my room and its well underway! its going to look beautiful with a suspended ceiling, that may change the celining colour dependant on budget, focus wall, much flatter walls, new floor, and much more sophisticated!
Im geting older and my room has been the same way for years, so lets see what we can do eh?!
Ive got one grand to spend and that must include all materials, new lights, suave computer desk and well... Everything, me things 'Ka' will like this room alot (dont worry he knows who he is!)
Day 1 preperation:
I had finished with a drink in with paul and chris and about 3 oclock and started to take things out of my room, after i posted a cheque and we had some mcdonalds (which im not the biggest fan of but still!)
I came hom and started to dissaseble my gym. That took me a few hours while chris was cleaning his car, well, what the carwash missed. Speakers, Plasma, Comuter desk apart, and by he time the room was cleared the day was almost over and decided to call it a night.
Spotlights only at this point leaving me with...
Budget:£910
Day 2: Steaming and materials.
I got up and 10, grr, a me and my mum trecked out to see what we could get for the time being. I managed to get my circular saw, randoms orbital sander, screws, sandpaper refills, paint 5mm Metal rope, metal rope clamps, hooks, and some other things i cant remeber off the top off my head. I also order panels of MDF for my suspended ceiling, approx 2 x 1 meter panels and they will have everything on, shame it was a £20 delivery charge
The idea beind it is that my celing will be lowered but there will be approximately a 1 foor gap aroung the edge, on the lowered ceiling on the top there will be a long light all the way round the edge and this will make the edge of the room glow. On the bottom of the MDF will be my 6 spotlights and the will provide the rooms light. Get it? Well im sure you can pop ound and see at some point.
Making an utter and complete mess of the hose, im using the orbital sander to do the walls, and its becoming pretty messy. It took me 3 hours to recess a plug fully into the wall, but that also includes the calbe too, but i feel relly happy i done it myself, since it looks nice. Just need to put all that plaster back in again!
Polcell (makers of pollyfiller) have made a new product on the market. Its call smoothover. Theres three types, One for damaged and craked walls, ones for textured artex and one for textured wallpaper. Just spread it one and youe have a lovely smooth surface to paint on.
Now, my walls are useless, the have hairline cracks in,big patches of missing plaster, and overall are quite uneven, so this sounded llike the perfect product. I relaised wickes only do their own make, so then went to homebase where i was told it was. It was £25 for a 5 litre tube which covers approximately 10m square @ 2mm on average, Theres more. You have to purchase their 'applicator' to lay it on the wall. Basically a long, smooth, flat piece of matal ona handle £7. Bloody hell seems a bit steep doesnt it? mind you i would pay anything to get my walls smooth at this stage...
I started to apply the paste to the wall, and was getting quite fustrated that it didnt seem to work so smoothly, laying on nice pice of paste down then ruining in when i went over it, due to the edge of the trail they recomended. I spend a good hour on this and by the tie i was done, i was very fustrated that this expensive piece of shit i bought was useless! Feel free to call me a bad decorator but when you look at this
What a nightmare, my only hope of NOT using paper and some type of smoothing agent has left me a bit stuck now, and may go for a type of paint wickes recommended me.
The room finally was finished stipping at about half 12 and at 2:15 i should really be in bed now, but i really wanted to look back on how much time this has taken me! I have a week off and from the moment i get up to the moment i go to bed, the rom is the focus.
Wednesday the spotlights are being delivered and thursday the wood comes so i want to a least prepare the celing and electrics for when they do arrive.
ps ive use 1 and a half boxes of filler this is how bad my room is.
Smoothover, Tool, Polfill (free when bought with two other polycell products wohoo), junction box, wire, wire tubing for walls,
